BRIDAL SKINCARE: How to get perfect skin for your wedding day.
Every bride wants to look their best on their big day, but when the wedding countdown ticks down, it can be hard not to panic. One area of the planning you want to have completely under control is how your skin looks. We hope these essential tips will help you look your best on your special day!
To get the best out of your skin, you need to start well in advance of your wedding day. You shouldn’t be worrying about blemishes and breakouts the week or days before. Ideally, a healthy daily routine of diet, exercise, and skincare should be put in place three to four months before your wedding. However, there are always a few things you can do to get a beautiful glow right up to the day of.
If possible, we do recommend testing skincare products long before the big day. Avoid trying too many new products in the days before in case you suffer a reaction, especially if you’re super sensitive. Knowing your skin and avoidance tactics is always the key to smart and beautiful skin.
3 - 4 Months Out - Get a Routine on, Baby!
Throughout the next several months, your routines will often be interrupted with phone calls, fittings, consultations, trials, planning, and lots of running around. Stress levels may increase during this time, and sleep may be compromised. It is during these times that it is most important to remind yourself to take a deep breath, relax, and try to keep some sense of routine and normalcy.
One of the best routines to keep is your skincare. Oftentimes, it takes your skin 10-30 days to purge or adjust to new skincare products. Identifying products that work for you and giving your skin the time it needs to adjust well in advance will get you the beautiful wedding day glow you want.
Take this time to test out various cleansers, exfoliators, masks, serums and moisturizers to see what regimen gives you the “look” you’re after. This is also a good time to consult with your aesthetician if you want to get on a facial treatment program. Remember, beautiful skin is the best canvas for a makeover. So even though your makeup artist will do their magic, give them something great to work with!
Although schedules can change last minute, try to keep routines with your skincare, diet, and exercise. In your pursuit for your ideal weight, don’t neglect the essential hydration your skin needs to look fresh.
3 Months Out - Cleansers!
Have a great cleanser handy as you will undoubtedly be testing out various looks with new makeup products and trials with makeup artists. Never leave it to chance that you have to grab some regular soap to wash your face! The worse thing for your skin is leaving residue of these products on overnight, causing breakouts or sensitivity.
Your makeup remover and/ or cleanser should leave your skin fresh without stripping natural oils.
2 Months Out - Start Exfoliating Regularly!
Exfoliate at least 3 times a week. As we age, the skin cell turnover process slows down, so it’s important that we facilitate our skin’s process by exfoliation in our skincare routine to maintain fresh, healthy skin.
Skin cell turnover is the rate at which the skin produces new cells. New skin cells travel from the lowest layer of the epidermis (stratum basale) to the top layer, die and are shed off to reveal healthier, younger, ‘glowing’ skin.
Average rates of Skin Cell Turnover by age: Babies, 14 days
Teens, 21-28 days In your twenties, 24-30 days In your thirties, 28-35 days In your forties, 30- 42 days In your fifties and +, 45-84 days
Try a gentle, multi-tasking, multi-efficient exfoliator like the SMART Skin Perfecting Polisher to exfoliate, peel, and tone for softer, more radiant skin. Its natural fruit acids and sugar cane glycolics help to loosen dead skin, while soft caviar-like beads lift off dead skin.
Drink lots of water and try eating watermelon which is a great source of water, hydration, and nutrients, yet has only 30 calories.
While hydration is important make sure you’re taking the proper multivitamins or intaking nutrients you may be missing out on. For perfect radiant skin, look to pack your diet with sources of of these vitamins with a good track record: vitamin A for wrinkles, vitamin B3 for redness, vitamin C for spots, vitamin E for moisture and vitamin K for dark circles will ensure you look good and feel good. Of course, always check with your doctor if you have questions regarding supplements or diet.
1 Month Out
As we have said, your skin craves moisture and hydration. But your skin type depends on how you moisturize correctly. For oily skin types, you may want to use an oil-free moisturizer or serum while maintaining hydration. Try our oil-free S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting Serum+Primer for a boost of vitamins, hydration, plus an instant mattifying effect. For dryer skin keep, look for a moisturizer with natural oils. Exfoliation prior to moisturization will also allow moisture properties to penetrate onto skin better. For breakout-prone or sensitive skin, make sure your moisturizer is non-allergenic and non-comedogenic.
More than any other day in your life, your hands will have a lot of attention. Give them the respect they need by using natural oils such as almond or coconut on your hands and nails. Also, remember to keep lips looking delicious with a lip balm containing vitamin E to avoid cracked chapped lips for that first kiss as husband and wife.
If you tend to suffer cold sores, or your wedding happens to be during harsh winter months, experiment with using vanilla extract. It needs to be the pure vanilla extract as it acts as a natural cold sore remedy. Apply directly to the sore four times a day until no longer required.
